A shift is in the air- can you feel it? Summer is looming just ahead and it's about time I drop a few gems on keeping your locs moisturized during the hot months. It's a well known fact that too much sun can damage our skin, but it's time we talk about how it can damage our hair as well. Prolonged contact with the sun's rays can not only damage the structure of the follicle, but also drain the hair of it's moisture and sheen. I've seen many try to combat dry hair by piling on oils and products, but the truth is that will just lead to greasy, weighed down locs and lots of build-up.

So do you want to know the key to having moisturized locs? Okay fine I'll tell you...

Water. Yup, good ole H2O will save you every time. Our bodies love it, so it's no surprise that our hair loves it, too. Drinking plenty of water and eating well makes the hair shiny and healthy, and it even grows faster! Also, lightly spraying your hair with water is very beneficial to the growth and aesthetic of your locs. Wetting the hair causes it to swell slightly, giving the hair a fuller look. Dampened locs are also easier to manipulate than they are while dry, so always spray before styling.

Try using rose water, which can be bought or made at home. Rose water has healing and hydrating properties and promotes growth. You can also try making your own water mixture by filling a spray bottle with water and adding a few drops of olive oil and an essential oil that aligns with what your hair and scalp need, and what scents you like. Spritz your hair with water at least once a day everyday during the summer, or more as needed. After you spray, lock that moisture in with a lightweight oil like coconut, grape seed, jojoba, or sweet almond and you'll be set all summer long!
